Hi Everyone and Welcome to Woodkraft!
My story began on June 20, 2018.
My name is Katie, and I live in Shelburne, Ontario. While walking across the street close to my home, I was struck by a pickup truck. I am told that I flew approximately 25 feet through the air and landed on the pavement.
I was seriously injured and transported to the Trauma Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.
My pelvis was badly broken, I had five broken ribs and sustained a traumatic brain injury, along with numerous scrapes and bruises.
At Sunnybrook, the surgeons performed surgery on my pelvis. I was bedridden on my back for 12 weeks. My parents and I were fortunate to receive guidance and care from an incredible health care team. The first year and a half of my recovery was very difficult for not only me but also my parents. Without the support and guidance from my parents and this incredible health care team, I would not be where I am today in my journey to recovery. I would also like to thank HABI (Headwaters Acquired Brain Injury) and Mind Forward and all the wonderful people I have met through these local associations. I am sincerely grateful.
Since I have always had a keen interest in woodworking, my Team and I decided that creating some wood projects would be good therapy. My Rehab Coach and mother, Karen, stepped in for support and to get me started. We converted my second bedroom into a paint shop and use the garage for cutting and sanding. Karen partnered with me and also really enjoys working with wood to make custom creations. To date, we have mainly done creations for friends and family. We thank each and everyone of you for your support!
So, this is how it all started.
